Tucked away in Perth's leafy Peppermint Grove, they raised their two children in the single-level house, which is walking distance to a golden-sand beach and peppermint tree-lined river. But when their children grew up and their son moved interstate, the much-loved home no longer suited their needs.

“The residential design codes are changing with the intent to reduce urban sprawl in Perth and create higher-density housing,” Ms Staunton says. “We are seeing smaller blocks that need higher consideration for their layout, functionality and land/block efficiency. WA designers are thinking differently about space and the structures of a building.”
